Ectopic Pregnancy Deaths Nearly Double in U.S ,Climbing Fastest in Abortion_Ban States

Deaths linked to ectopic pregnancy in the United States have nearly doubled over the past six years, an investigation by ProPublica published 10 September 2026 found.

Analyzing CDC death and birth records, the outlet counted 196 such deaths between 2020 and 2026, against 106 in the prior six-year span, with the national rate climbing from 7.1 to 9.8 per million live births - but reaching 13.1 in 18 states with strict abortion bans (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia), even though every one of those bans includes a written exception for ectopic care.

More than a dozen maternal health experts who reviewed the findings for ProPublica said the spike had gone largely unnoticed and cautioned that bans alone cannot explain the national rise, pointing also to pandemic-era care disruptions, untreated infections that raise ectopic risk, and long-standing Medicaid coverage gaps in ban states.

Several experts nonetheless linked documented delays in emergency ectopic treatment -doctors waiting for an ironclad ultrasound diagnosis out of fear of prosecution -to at least part of the increase, noting that with prompt care, such deaths are almost entirely preventable.
